About Herasight
Herasight provides comprehensive genetic screening for families pursuing IVF. We help you understand what predispositions your embryos have inherited and how their genetic risks differ in order to help you make an informed choice of which embryo to transfer.
Our testing starts with different questions about parents and embryos. Parental carrier screening looks for variants associated with recessive or X-linked conditions. Targeted embryo testing can then address a known disease-causing variant in the family, subject to feasibility review. Polygenic screening estimates risk for common diseases influenced by many genetic variants, ranging from type 1 diabetes to schizophrenia. These estimates do not predict an individual child’s health with certainty.
Testing that starts with your family's question
You may be planning IVF around a known inherited condition, considering additional screening during a cycle, or looking for more information about embryos you’ve already created. Different genetic tests address different concerns. The appropriate testing plan depends on your family's question, available samples and case-specific feasibility:
| Your question | The relevant test |
|---|---|
| Are there chromosome abnormalities? | Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) screens for extra or missing chromosomes and gains or losses of chromosome segments. |
| Has an embryo inherited a particular disease-causing variant? | Preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic disorders (PGT-M) asks whether an embryo inherited a known familial disease-causing variant, such as one associated with cystic fibrosis. Each case requires a feasibility review. |
| How do embryos differ in inherited risk for complex diseases? | Preimplantation genetic testing for polygenic conditions (PGT-P) estimates risk using the combined effects of many genetic variants. This test measures genetic risks associated with common diseases ranging from diabetes to colon cancer. |
Our guide to the different types of PGT explains how these questions fit together. A documented familial variant deserves specific attention: PGT-M assessment includes confirming the variant and planning a suitable test.
The people behind Herasight
Our co-founders include Tobias Wolfram, who has published extensively in statistical genetics, and Jonathan Anomaly, whose writing examines the science and ethics of genetic technologies.
Our scientific leadership includes:
-
Tobias Wolfram, PhD, a behavioral and statistical geneticist studying genetic prediction of disease and cognitive ability.
-
Alex Young, PhD, a statistical geneticist whose work develops family-based methods for distinguishing direct genetic effects from indirect effects and confounding.
-
Mamad Ahangari, PhD, a statistical geneticist with research in psychiatric genetics, neurodevelopmental disorders and schizophrenia.
-
Justin Schleede, PhD, FACMG, our Executive Lab Director, with experience in clinical molecular genetics and laboratory leadership.
Our genetic counselors help families understand their results so they can make a decision about which embryo to prioritize for transfer.
Working with us
We begin with where you are in the IVF process, and try to understand what kinds of diseases or traits you may wish to influence. Feel free to explore our embryo screening tool to get a sense of what we can offer.
Contact Herasight to discuss your circumstances and get an overview of our pricing. If you already have embryos in storage, tell us which laboratory performed their testing so we can assess the route from existing records to additional information.
