Jonathan Anomaly
Philosopher, Co-founder of Herasight
Jonathan Anomaly is a co-founder of Herasight whose work examines the ethics of genetic enhancement and embryo selection. He writes about the genetic technologies open to parents, the responsibilities those choices bring, and their consequences for society.
His book, Creating Future People: The Science and Ethics of Genetic Enhancement, discusses the science behind polygenic embryo selection and gene editing and their implications for parental freedom and public policy. A central concern is how choices that make sense for individual families can also affect other people.
Before helping build Herasight, Jonathan taught in philosophy, politics, and economics programs, including at Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill. His background in economics informs his view that social norms and political institutions shape parental preferences over the traits of their children.
For readers interested in the ethical reasoning behind our approach, he co-authored The Ethics of Embryo Screening, a working paper on reproductive choice, disease risk, disability, and responsible use. His wider collection of articles includes work on genetic enhancement, public health, and political philosophy.
